The type of surface finish selected can also affect the corrosive resistance of stainless steel

Choosing a material with a course finish can lower its ability to resist corrosion. In general, a lower gauge number indicates stainless steel that is thicker and higher quality. A low gauge number is necessary for some items to prevent dents or other damage from occurring over time.
