There are many reasons to visit Osaka. Kyoto is an hour by train from Osaka. Nara is thirty minutes by train from Kyoto. During this trip, I visited Koyasan, which is just one hour and thirty minutes by train from Osaka. In between them is the covered shopping arcade Shinsaibashi Suji.
