I always show the students this photo from my first week as a graduate cadet journalist

I talk about the typewriter and that it would be two more years until there were computers in this newsroom. My message is always: be adaptable. Adaptable is what I had to become as technology changed. The seeking out of news and stories was a constant but how we delivered that to readers changed a lot.

She does things her own way but expects me to listen to everything she says.
